Hockey NZ Regions

Hockey NZ is a country wide favourite. This can be seen in how each region has a strong grassroots development culture. Wherever there is a striving hockey league there are various teams and clubs from as young as 8 years old. In the many Hockey regions in New Zealand the most prominent are Wellington Hockey, Canterbury hockey and Auckland hockey.

Wellington Hockey

Welling hockey is more popular for hosting American and Canadian ice hockey teams during their off season. Also, the recent formation of the Wellington Ice Hockey Association will only boost the growth and popularity of sport in the region. Wellington also hosts two field hockey teams in the NHL. The Capital Cobras men and women’s teams represent Wellington in the New Zealand NHL.

Canterbury Hockey

Canterbury has a thriving hockey culture which is seen in their commitment to primary school level players. Canterbury hosts two NHL field hockey teams the Canterbury Cavaliers which is the men’s team and the Canterbury Cats which is the women’s team. Canterbury hockey also hosts ice hockey team Canterbury Red Devils.

Auckland Hockey

Auckland hockey hosts two ice hockey teams the Botany Swarm and West Auckland Admirals.

Otago Hockey

The South Island hockey association has four field hockey associations North Otago, Central Otago, Otago and Southland as well as Invercargill hockey associations. They host two ice hockey teams Dunedin Thunder and Southern Stampede.

The Difference between Ice hockey and Field Hockey

The fundamental difference between field and ice hockey is in where the game is played. Field hockey as the name suggests is played on a field with turf while ice hockey is played on a rink. Field hockey consists of 11 players and ice hockey has six players. Ice hockey is more of a contact sport than field hockey. The goal posts in field hockey are just over 2 metres high 3.7 metres wide which is wider than ice hockey’s 1.2 metres high and 1.8metres wide.
