About the AFL – Australian Rules Football

The AFL is made up of 18 teams and which all compete mainly for the AFL grand final. The AFL ladder is highly competitive and volatile. For example, Hawthorn finished 12th out of 18 in the AFL Grand final 2017 but was in the top four teams of the AFL Grand Final 2018.

The AFL season consists of 23 rounds of regular season games and then four rounds of the AFL Grand Final. The teams that make ot to the four final rounds of the Australian Football League Grand Final are determined by the points accrued throughout the season.

In Aussie Rules football, a team earns four points for a win and 2 points for a draw. What happens when teams have equal number of points, how are the AFL Ladder positions decided. Finishing Ladder Positions according to Aussie rules are determined by the total number of points and the scoring percentage. The number of points being the total win and tie points. The scoring percentage is determined via a simple calculation.

(Points For divided by Points Against) x 100 = Scoring percentage.

Scoring Percentage shows the teams ratio of points scored to points conceded.

Australian AFL State Leagues

There are eight state leagues under the Australian Football main league. The South Australian National football League, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Victoria AFL, West Australian AFL, Tasmanian State League, North East Australian Football League.

Each of the state AFL leagues have their state league Aussie football grand finals games. The state league grand finals are played amongst the top five teams in each league. The top five teams are determined the same way the AFL top eight are determined. The combination of the total wins and ties together with the soring percentage decide the top five.
